Since tabs were introduced in web browsers, session restore has become a standard feature. Web browsers can handle crashes and restore sessions reliably (most of the time). In many ways, an IDE is also a kind of file browser. Simplification, yes, but the opened tabs and their order help restore my mental context. You might have a better memory than mine; I often rely on visual cues.
