it is artificial to break this single bug report.
quite a few problems contributed to this bug, and we fixed them step by step,
to check for possible regressions.
the last step is cleaning up the code that remains inactive. a byproduct is a
major reduction in https requests needed to invoke the same pages.
also, the final patch here depends on the final patch to the corresponding bug
in the framework.
