I agree that this is a 1.3.0 change and should only be merged to a 1.3.x branch. Since 1.2.0 is such a recent release, I would prefer not to fork a 1.3.x branch yet. There might be bugs that we need ti fix in 1.2.x. So what I suggest is that we can leave this PR open and merge it once we do fork Pekko 1.3.0.
