   > In short, we allow for overlap of contested areas on the country map viz
plugin.

The notion that Crimea is an "objectively contested" area, that "impartial
cartographers", being "above politics", should paint however they please, is
derived from the hubris of NaturalEarth maintainers (it was hotly debated in
2017,
[here](https://zverok.space/writing/onwar/2024-04-25-1783560948646621601.html)
is some context; they never updated the map since).

I believe that world history since then has already demonstrated the
problems of this approach. Current Superset's polygon of Russia's border has no
meaning for any person in the world, because:

   1. If you want to follow international law, Crimea is not a part of Russia
   2. If you want to follow the "situation on the ground" (as NaturalEarth
maintainers once rationalized), you should incorporate a war map like [this
one](https://deepstatemap.live/en) into the Superset codebase and update it
daily. And then do the same for all the "contested areas" with active wars,
right?.. This would be fair.
   3. If, for the sake of the argument, you want to follow the _Russian_ point
of view, the map of Russia should include **four more regions of Ukraine**,
which they added to their constitution in 2022. For context, neither of these
regions is fully controlled by Russia as of today, so this addition is both
lawless _and_ false "on the ground".

So, what purpose does the _current_ map serve, other than "we derived this
data and don't want to think of it anymore"? (With only Crimea being included
as a "contested area")

In a hypothetical situation, when a poor, innocent Russian teacher wants to
use Superset in their classroom and you don't want them to be arrested for
"wrong" Russia map (that's another argument NaturalEarth maintainers
[utilize](https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/disputed-boundaries-policy/),
when they talk about "disputed" maps policy), the current Superset wouldn't
save this pure soul.

In most other contexts, the intersection of Russia and Ukraine on "disputed"
Crimea is either an irritating nuisance or reinforces the subconscious
stereotypes that "the Crimea situation has always been tricky". (No, it is not,
it is just occupied against international law, the same as Mariupol, Donets,
Berdyansk, and many other cities which neither NaturalEarth nor Superset dare
to display as part of Russia.)

Please tell us how to proceed so that this would be fixed.
