My current guess is that LANG is set in your terminal, but that you ran nmbug-status from a cron job where it wasn't set. If that's the case, try adding: export LANG=en_US.UTF-8 to your cron job (or replace with whichever encoding you like). We don't care about the preferred language yet, but we could [1]. There's actually not all that much that needs translating for nmbug-status.
