You are not trying through a remote login shell, are you? I mean using putty or 
telnet?

If you are you'll need a X server at your machine and do the following before 
starting nam.

export DISPLAY=<you-ip>:0.0

Or you can install X-Win32 or Hummingbird which can do it them selves.
