If you are contemplating a MAX232, I'd recommend the MAX233. its much
simpler to configure using less components.  If you go to the Maxim website,
you can most likely order some for free as evaluation parts.

You could possibly pull 3.3V off pin13 to power the chip? You just need five
0.1uF caps. A Max232 costs about $5 or less.
