I've just finished reading William Donaldson's book on Scottish piping "Pipers" and in the final section he looks at a couple of tunes. In analyzing the piobaireachd Black Donald's March he refers a single short figure "repeatedly asserted, and alternating with other set figures to produce an antiphonal "call and response" sequence".

I've also heard highland pipers talk of it as "question and answer".
