Photographic evidence is available of hose-pipes, a goose, ermine, and various 
permutations of Sean the sheep.

Not to mention the various flags, stripes, gingham.....

In NZ one can buy possum skins which are just about big enough.
Brocade works well (on a more sensible note). Washable fabric might be sensible 
(cotton velvet can be washed with care, despite what any labels might say)
Get the nap lying a way you're comfortable with when you make the cover if 
you're 
going to use it (or anything else with a similar effect) - velvet can feel like 
stroking a cat the wrong way else.
