If you dual boot with windows :
- boot on windows
- plug your external device
- unmount cleanly your device by using the 'safely remove hardware' 
icon in the windows taskbar notification area
- unplug your device
- boot on ubuntu and plug again. That should work.

If you don't have windows, you don't have others choice than configuring
your external device in fstab.
