This is about 100% sure to be a kernel bug. Could you please do
echo t > /proc/sysrq-trigger
then send the full output of
dmesg
What extra patches have the Ubuntu 2.6.20 kernel?
Some kernel patches can indeed cause loopback related kernel deadlocks
which so far couldn't be reproduced with vanilla kernels. But we don't know
yet what exactly is that patch yet and your help would be appreciated a
lot.
