So you discovered the answer the hard way....

We take care to change the library version to avoid
uncontrolled use of old versions. The lastest API
version is 73 (libntfs-3g.so.73.0.0)

The change you mentioned was done to improve
the compression of long runlists caused by very
fragmented files or sparse files. The old method
caused a major bottleneck which was pointed at by
users, and we had to break it.

Now, if you need help to adapt to the current API,
please ask.
