Assuming this document - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785914%28WS.10%29.aspx - is correct and not simply glossing over the technical details for readability, the changes are stored in the shadow copy itself. This makes it hard enough to do on a shared volume that the problem is best solved in other ways... oh well. Still, it would be nice to be able to access shadow copies from an offline volume.
