The problem with Windows 8 is probably unrelated. By default Windows 8 only partially shuts down, leaving the partitions on the internal disk in an inconsistent state. My conclusion is that an option is needed to check the consistency of a saved image. This should be like executing the full restore code without writing anything. There will still be a need to recover old images which got corrupted...
