The problem has to do with \zeropoint being mapped to \dimen12 (Plain's \z@), and \dimen12 is a scratchdimen in supp-mps, so in your cont-new.tex add:
\newdimen\zeropoint \zeropoint = 0pt \newdimen\onepoint \onepoint = 1pt
