When you use the old \place... commands you have to write

\placetable [here,split} {...} {...}

BTW: \placetable expects either {...} or \bgoup ...\egroup as second mandatory argument, in your case you has been lucky because \startxtable has an \bgroup in its definition but you shouldn't rely on this.
