The second and third page from attachment display what I mean by
horizontal subcolumnsets.

It avoids calling a nil, but I only get the uppercase letters for the
last line (the one with `\setupbodyfont[ibmplex,rm]`)

What about adding and extra run (after every insert ends up in its page)
for alphabetic sorting?

As a user, I think this extra run is totally justified to perform the
extra task.
