I downloaded the latest ConTeXt LMTX version (2025.11.24) and I can't get this
minimal example to work:

\startchapter[title={Sounds and graphics}]
\startsection[title={Sounds}]
\stopsection
\startsection[title={Graphics}]
\stopsection
\stopchapter
\startappendices
\startchapter[title={Sun and moon}]
\startsection[title={Sun}]
\stopsection
\startsection[title={Moon}]
\stopsection
\stopchapter
\stopappendices
\stoptext
Both chapters and appendices ended up being numbered with letters, instead of
using numbers for chapters and letters for appendices.
A Sounds and graphics
A.1 Sounds
A.2 Graphics
A Sun and moon
A.1 Sun
A.2 Moon
