In case someone else is facing this issue, it looks like using
mixedcolumns with the option `balanced=yes` gives the output I would expect
from \startcolumns ... \stopcolumns :
```
\starttext
\definemixedcolumns
[mycolumns]
[n=4,balance=yes]
\startmycolumns
\input knuth
\stopmycolumns
\stoptext
```
(Although I could not figure out for sure whether it is strictly identical
in every case.)
