It seems to me that the following code worked in some beta 2 weeks ago:

\definecolor
[BgColor1]
[white]
\definecolor
[BgColor2]
[r=0.7,g=0.7,b=1]

\startMPcode
path p; p := unitsquare scaled 3cm;
linear_shade(p,0,\MPcolor{BgColor2},\MPcolor{BgColor1});

But with 2006.07.14 I get:
