I rebooted into my linux system, and it is indeed a variable called
font_mem_size. Here is the setting in my texmf.cnf:

% Words of font info for TeX (total size of all TFM files,
approximately). 
font_mem_size = 2500000

(it was 500000 before I changed the value). 

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I know nothing about windoze.
