\def\comm{\thinspace\groupedcommand\tt\thinspace}
 works quite well.

From a newbie standpoint, I wonder why replacing \thinspace with 
\hspace[medium] fails?

(I had another version
 \def\comm#1{\hspace[medium]{\tt#1}\hspace[medium]}
it worked.)
