Okay, that seems to work, too. But why use the [current] argument? Are 
there conditions where

   \getmarking[chapter]

doesn't return the current chapter title?

Hmm, that doesn't happen for me. I'm using the 2007-01-23 release of 
ConTeXt. Which version are you using?
