as taco mentioned ... most open type fonts have no italic correction

automatically figuring it out is not always an option, compare (in 
pdftex):

\sl \the\fontdimen1\font\the\dimexpr1em\relax \`A \'A

\bs \the\fontdimen1\font\the\dimexpr1em\relax \`A \'A

\it \the\fontdimen1\font\the\dimexpr1em\relax \`A \'A

i can imagine that we start building a database with additional font 
parameters
