It's the same issue as with the cow.
Perhaps a bug-report in the tracker would help...

A workaround could be, to measure first the width of the content (\setbox...
or similar) and then adjust the width=... options for the table cells.

there is a first pass measuring the natural width and with the whole table is too wide to fit hsize, the available width is equally distributed, unless a width is forced
