I guess modes aren’t meant for this but again i can only offer my annotation
module.

\usemodule[annotation]

\defineannotation[test][alternative=text]

\starttext

A \test{B} C

\setupannotation[test][alternative=none,next=\ignorespaces]

A \test{B} C

\stoptext
