Sorry for the spamming, according to older examples on the list, this
seems to work:

\startplacetable[location=force,number=no]
\starttabulate[|r|l|]
\HL
\NC I want this table \NC aligned in the center.\NR
\HL
\stoptabulate
\stopplacetable

There is also a location=nonumber. I don't know what is the difference.
