We are on the home stretch now. I added
\enableregime  [utf-8] 
as the first line of my
master file. Theoretically I don't need this for a
MKIV run but so much for theory.

 Everything works. But there is
something wrong with my math code. There is no
horizontal bar between the 1 and the 2.  I guess
I will study "The TEXbook" some more.

Just FYI, I keep personal stuff and also my
political articles in /home/safe but my
typesetting and index work goes in subdirectories
of:
/usr/local/active/
one for each project.
