Thanks to Wolfgang's assistance I figured that the syntax in my OP was correct and the issue is with my installation. It works for me in a virgin installation, but throws the abovementioned error in my current installation. I don't know what borked my installation and why it only affected some fonts and not others. So sorry for the noise and thanks for quick responses.
