Hi, It has been reported [1] in Debian that ntop includes 4 files under the Creative Commons Non Commercial license: countmin.[ch] and prgn.[ch].
Unfortunately this license is not compatible with the Debian Free Software Guidelines [2] because it imposes non-acceptable restrictions (i.e. the code cannot be used for commercial purposes). Similarly, and unrelated to Debian, that license is not compatible with GPL under which ntop is distributed, because the GPL itself forbids imposing additional restrictions on the software. I have written to the author of countmin and prng asking if it would be possible to re-license the code under both CC-BY-NC and GPL. However I have not got an answer yet. Unless we solve this issue quickly, ntop will be soon removed from Debian. I have not found another suitable count-min skethes implementation. Do you think it could be replaced with some other data structure without impacting performance too much? Otherwise, it looks like ntop is using a simple subset of the functionality of countmin, so I can see if I have some time to re-implement that subset based on the paper describing the data structure.
