Still getting this error BTW. I tried rebuilding Python 2.6.8 with -fPIC in the 
Python Makefile... I've tried adding -fPIC to CC = in a number of ntop 
Makefiles, no luck.

(I managed to get past the PKG_CHECK_MODULES issue by commenting it out in 
configure.in)
