(Excerpted & Slightly updated from a 07Jan2001 post to ntop and ntop-dev)
We don't mind helping people, but you do have to give the rest of the people
monitoring this mailing list some basic information.
I've given notice that I will not reply to ANY "NTop has a bug" messages
unless you provide some reasonable information about your configuration!
(If you don't like it, ask somebody else to support you... I don't think
it's unreasonable to ask it... If you're uncomfortable giving specifics
(such as which mail server, then leave it generic))
Specifically:
Hardware
Type & # of processors (given in your msg)
Amount of memory
# network interfaces and types (vendor, bus, etc.)
Software
NTop version, source and any applied patches
If you've compiled from the source, say so!
If you're using a package (such as an .rpm), where did you get
it from and what is the EXACT name?
The EXACT command line you are using to invoke NTop
OS vendor & version
Any major upgrades (kernel, networking, etc.)
gcc version (e.g. gcc --version)
glibc version
What else is running
Network
Roughly where are the interface(s) you're monitoring (Public Internet,
Private LAN, what?)
What's the bandwidth (e.g. 10 Mbps University internet, 1.5 Mbps T1,
CableModem capped at 1.5Mbps, 56K dialup)
How many machines (traffic sources/destinations) and users

Subject: [Ntop-dev] 2 problems: images !served && 2 nics, but only get
stats for one
Hey folks!
I looked through the past couple of months of threads, and I didn't see
anyone mentioning the problems I'm having. Forgive me if this is old news,
and please courteously refer me to the proper documentation if it is.
First of all, I had to do the makefile editing mentioned in the FAQ to get
ntop to compile on linux (Slackware 8.0). Now that it's running, I've got a
couple of problems:
1) ntop is not serving images
Is this because I don't have X or any image libs on the box? This server
will run headless, so I didn't install any graphics on it. I saw the images
in {srcdir}/html, but it doesn't appear they got installed anywhere. Ntop on
my workstation, that does have X and graphics libs, serves the images just
fine. I don't see the /html directory in /usr/local/[lib,bin] though. If I
do need to install graphics libs, would someone please kindly tell me which
ones are necessary for compiling on linux?
/{logDir}/ntop.access.log shows the images going out with 200 headers,
but what's actually being served is a page that says, "Unable to generate
the page requested"
2) Switching NICs does not change the statistics
I'm running ntop with the following cmd in my startup script:
(${ntopBin} -i eth0,eth1 -d -M -S 1 -w ${httpPort} -P ${dbDir} -a
${logDir} >/dev/null 2>&1)
The way I read the manpage, that should let me switch between looking at
stats on both networks by switching the NICs. However, if I switch to eth1
on the 20.0/24 network, I only see stats and hosts from the 21.0/24 network.
If I switch to eth0 on 21.0/24, I see the statistics I expect to see. Am I
doing something wrong? FWIW, there is VERY little traffic on the 20.0/24
network.
Thanks for all your help!
