Oh, call it 2.5x and later (IIRC 2.52 or 2.53 was the first usable
version)... 

Also, FWIW, I've saw some small issues with automake 1.9.x which has some
compatibility issues vs. the 1.6.x series.  I had to do a little bit of
tweaking so it worked cleanly with both.  But this is nowhere as bad as the
autoconf 2.13 -> 2.50 changes however.

define "older" ... the patch i posted should work fine with autoconf-2.13
and
autoconf-2.59
