Without being completely sure
i think it's the the number of packets totally
inserted in the ring slots and the number of packets
totally read.

for example whenever tot_insert > tot_read that means
you have new packets in the ring buffer that must be
queued.

Excuse me if i'm wrong ( ;) ), this is what i
realised...
