I've just installed ntop in two different FreeBSD machines & generally I've very impressed
with the information provided and the presentation in web mode. As with virtually all
open source software the documentation is extremely sparse but I guess thats a common
occupational hazard :) I've searched through the mailing list archives for hours without finding
any information of use, and the specific FreeBSD link is apparently broken ... at least email
sent that way is returned with "

Both were installed using the "ports" facility. There doesn't appear to be a command to
check exactly what versions I have, but judging from the /usr/ports/net/ntop/README.html
files, both machines appear to have ntop version 1.1

First machine is local 4.0 RELEASE server with several LAN machines connected & a
permanent dialup modem link to the POP site  ..... it appears to work fine .... monitors
every machiine on local LAN, but only gives results in table format (I can't figure how to
get graphs). This machine has no functional CVS.

Second machine is the POP site, 4.1 RELEASE running an ethernet link to an ISP .... it
starts OK in the interactive mode but apparently only monitors the "x10" link to the ISP
from whom we buy our internet connectivity ... no data for the 26 serial interfaces can be
viewed. When I try starting webmode I get "-w is disabled for security reasons"

How do I fix this ??

I have remote root access to the POP machine via SSH / sudo

There is no .ntop file, and it certainly hasn't been told to disable anything bar some non-essential
services that we consider a security risk (telnet / rlogin / etc)

Only pecularity I can identify is a complaint during compiling about "lsof not found so some
functions will be disabled". That message appeared with both systems but I figure its not
critical since the 4.0 system appears to function perfectly. What functions exactly does it
mean by "disabled" ??
