The base compiler is gcc :)  cc is a wrapper to gcc, to make FreeBSD still 
BSD like. Some programs which run configure try to detect a system compiler, 
such as cc or c++, but don't check if its gcc, and won't pass some flags 
which may be needed for the compile.
