I also have occasional NTOP 2.0 failures without explanation. However they
are not that predictable. My hardware/software configuration is as follows:
CPU: Athlon 1700
RAM: 512Mb
HD: 40Gb
NICs: 4 x 3C980 PCI (eth0 with IP defined, and eth1,eth2, and eth3
used for NTOP with no IP defined)
OS: Red Hat 7.2 (kernel 2.4.7-10)
NTOP: 2.0 (no patches)
NTOP RUN: /usr/local/bin/ntop -d -n -S 1 -W 0 -K -L -i eth1,eth2,eth3
-w 3000 -m /etc/ntop/localsubnets -P /var/log/ntop -p
/etc/ntop/protocol.list -F /etc/ntop/netflow.list
LIBS: gcc-2.96-98, glibc-2.2.4-13
SERVICES: anacron, apmd, atd, crond, network, portmap, sshd, syslog,

With full load including NTOP (after several hours running in mid-day
traffic) system is consuming about 50% of RAM and 0% swap
total used free shared buffers cached

All NTOP interfaces are monitoring private LAN, router interfaces to be
exact using traffic mirroring on CISCO switch. Traffic passing through these
routers is roughly 1.5Mbit/s with bursts up to 3Mbit/s per connection
bringing the total bandwidth between 4-9Mbit/s. Total number of network
nodes is < 2000, but probably only 1/2 of that is connecting to this
location at any time.
