ntop is not very resource intensive... but it's very unique to your
situation!
You need enough memory available to hold information about your network
(hosts, who the contact, etc.)
* On my small home network, it uses 6.5% of 256MB - that's one internal
interface and one external (Cable Modem) one, talking to a few hosts.
You need enough processor speed to handle the average traffic load, with
some extra for peaks.
* On my network, it uses 0.1% of a PIII-800, 100MHz FSB - up to maybe
0.5% if I saturate the link.
You need decent NICs.
Not expensive, but any reasonably recent low-end unit is fine - I've used
LinkSys LNE100s NetGear FA310s and FA311s and 3Com - although the ISA 3Com
units might have issues. Right now I have an onboard (Sis900) and a 3C460B
running.
Look, a PCI nic costs USD$20 to $USD40, so buy one. Don't recycle a
3C509A...
Basically, any PCI nic will be able to keep up with the flow.
(Although I use one myself on Tigger), I wouldn't use USB NICs on even
moderately used links (the maximum effective throughput is 8Mbps of the
12Mbps USB bus, and that's not enough for a 10 or 100 Mbps link). (On a
cable modem link, which is limited to 1500Kbps down and 128Kbps up, USB is
ok).
If the machine is constrained on memory and processor, then only run ntop on
it.
You ought to be able to find one in the "junk" pile - PII-400 or better,
128MB RAM (256 is better) and a 2GB hard drive. Scrounge or buy a NIC.
That should do for most situations.
