That message means that either:

1) The file is in use - another instance of ntop is running

or

2) You don't have rights to create the file in the directory.


As to security:

Yes, you really, really, MUST create an id to run ntop.  Running with "-u
root" is stupid.  We've fixed the known risks, but what about unknown ones??

Also, the ntop id should be the ONLY id to have access to the directory you
specify in the -P parameter.

Uh.. sorry...

Is it correct using /tmp for that kind of files? No security risks???

And, BTW: would it be useful creating a user "ntop" which would then run the
app???
