Are you running as root?  If you don't have root or equivalent, when ntop
tries to open the NIC in promiscuous mode, you'll see that message.  That
should be caught and you shouldn't get to opening the NIC, but I wanted to
be sure...

Are you using a filter (-B option)?  If so, does the same filter work with
tcpdump - it should, but that's something else to eliminate...

otherwise, post the command line and the syslog extract before and after
this message, so we can see the whole of the startup messages, etc.
