Check the back traffic to the mailing list (unfortunately, I don't remember the date which makes it hard - July?) ... that FAQ entry was pulled from a message sent to the list...
What version of auto* do you have... For the new scripts, you need at least autoconf 2.51 and associated versions of automake and libtool. For the old scripts, autoconf 2.13 should work fine, but there may be issues w/ automake 1.7 - I don't think it's been tested.
