I'll dig as deep as my limited FreeBSD knowledge will let me, and report
back.

Every time I've told people to delete the directory and start again,
it's gone away. For me too... so beyond that I really don't have an
answer.

I can't say that I understand WHY I've seen it, but it's always been
permissions on .deps/.libs

Then again, I don't build ntop as root...

Maybe you have restrictive permissions on created directories, enough to
keep root out? Don't know enough FreeBSD to even be sure than could be
done. I *KNOW* you can hose yourself in Windows and NetWare FWIW...

Whack the directory, do the untar and ./configure and make all as the
same uid.

Otherwise, I suspect you're in for a long session of learning all about
the
auto* tools... welcome to my world... (Dante was wrong, there's at least
another circle)

Now that you mention that, I do remember that being talked about...

Only thing is, everything was done as root. I was in fresh directories
to be safe also, because I did the ports install first, realized it's
300 versions old, and wanted the new stuff you've been cranking out.

Check the back traffic -- you'll see that I've reported hitting that
problem if (the initial ?) compile is done as root and then you attempt
to compile as a non-root user.

What seems to happen is that when root creates that directory, the
permissions don't allow the normal user to see into it or create files.

Either

(as root) delete the directory
(non-root) ./configure et al -- this should recreate the directory

or

chown -R ntop.ntop .deps

There's a .libs ya gotta worry about too...

Burton,
The current CVS errors out on the plugins portion. I'm running FreeBSD

ntop /d will delete the existing service definition
ntop /i installs it
ntop /c runs in foreground

So the best way to update it is

ntop /d
ntop /i ....

Subject: [Ntop] windows ntop /i configuration update

Hello,

I'm trying to update my ntop startup configuration. When I do ntop /i,
now however, I get the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ntop /i
CreateService failed - The specified service already exists. (0x431)
NOTE: the default password for the 'admin' user has been set to 'admin'.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>

What's the best/preferred way to alter the ntop configuration?

Thanx,

David
