Hi,

i still felt that i had to answer to this. It's slightly off topic, it's my personal
feeling and what i think may seem strange to others. Please, read between the lines
and notice that i try to be constructive.

>Please think about how active this gentleman has been in addressing

I know that this gentleman is very valuable for the ongoing development of ntop, and i
don't want to debase his efforts in any way! That's not what i've done in my comments!
There's an important thing to consider when discussing this: to be grateful does not
mean one has to acquiesce everything. And it's one thing to be a busy
developer/supporter, but it's another thing to let the people know that they are small
fishes. To be honest: this does refer more to posts we allready had than to this
recent one.....but it fits in the line

Don't get me wrong: i'm kind of aware that questions like " how can i ..../ how do i
...." are annoying, especially if they show that obviously the questioner has not read
the provided docs/faqs. But the border between arrogance and legitimate criticism is
not as narrow as it seems! And in some way you felt sorry for the questioner,
otherwise you would'nt have posted an answer.

>It is their sacrifices, their talents and their labour; no one elses.

Absolutelty! We all have to be grateful. And because i am grateful, i try to
contribute with those little bits i can do. And if time has come and i'm more
experienced, i'll contribute more. All starters need time to become as professional as
others allready are......the latter also were'nt born as experts.

>... are damned to mediocrity and stupidity

We're all human beings. Not less, but also...not more.

>Please think about how active this gentleman has been in addressing
>genuine issues...

Believe me, i know that! Does this automatically mean we've to eliminate every
possibility of criticism?

With respect to the ntop developers and users and newbies (as i am),

        Thorsten

Dear Sir,

I am writing to thank you for your letter and say,

<off topic>

that you may have forgotten to who ntop-users are beholden to: there
would be nothing to say about _anything_ on this list but for the
developers.

It is their sacrifices, their talents and their labour; no one elses.

They are entitled to respect; anything more concrete in the way of
appreciation; patches if they are wrong; or as you suggest _silence_.

Lists that do not have the sort of challenging informal moderation - not
without a cost I might add - are damned to mediocrity and
stupidity. Have a look at Nagios-users if you don' think so.

Lastly, the remarks about nsh were off topic; there was as much a case
for condemning gratuitous remarks about a topic the writer has little
hard information on and certainly nothing to offer in the way of help
should the reader run into trouble.

Please think about how active this gentleman has been in addressing
genuine issues and what an unbelievably rich source of help and
teaching he is.

The thrust of this letter is that open source developers need to be
_cared_ for.
