rc1 is unsupported ... take it up w/ debian or use the source.
However,

Is indicative of needing the FILEDESCRIPTORBUG workaround - w/o that work
around, the descriptor 0 is returned which is corrupted/bogus and so it
won't open.
For an example of how to do this, see the line in
configureextra/LINUXredhat9:
