Used option 2 and just set the cflags for solaris 8 and it gets passed that
bit, complaining now about gdlibs but I'll have a fiddle with that next week
as that's on from building nagios but may need some tinkering.

This sounds like some missing compile flags. We never built a SOLARIS7
configureextra file so you should probably either

1) copy the file ./configureextra/SOLARIS8 to SOLARIS7 (and check with
Burton about the file naming it something with version but I forget.

2) Just pull the flags out of the SOLARIS8 file and use them when you invoke
./configure
