ACTUALLY, First off ... Get something current...

1. ntop 2.2 is more than 2 years old.
2. RedHat 7.3 is unsupported. By us OR RedHat.

Then think carefully about Nick's comment - he is dead on...

Note that with current ntop (3.1), there are a few reports of problems w/
RedHat 8.0, which I've traced - on my box - to differences between pthreads
and NPTL (9+) and so might affect 7.x too. BUT lots of folks are using old
RedHat releases just fine... (that's often true w/ threading issues - don't
you just love it!).

For starters....I would try and get a different box. NTOP can be resource
intensive, and you probalby don't want to kill a box that is Mail, Web, and
Proxy for your company. Then you can play around to figure out how to make
it work without fear of breaking a required box. Also, you will find that
running too much with NTOP is a bad thing.

Subject: [Ntop] ntop and rrd graphics on Red Hat 7.3

Hey everyone, I need some serious help, I'm kinda of linux noob and an ntop
noob. I installed ntop ver.2.2 on an Redhat 7.3 box that we use as a Web,
Mail and Proxy server.
At first the problem I had is that every time the rrd plugin tried to start
it said it couldn't create the /var/top/rrd directory, so after downloading
the rrdtool and getting nowhere I went a head and created the directories
manually, that is the :

/var/ntop/rrd
/var/ntop/rrd/flows
/var/ntop/rrd/interfaces
/var/ntop/rrd/graphics

Gave them the respective user rights and voila the plugin now ran ok. Now I
get an error that has to do with the libpng library it says something like
this:

program was compiled using the png.h on package libpng-1.2.4 program using
the png.c file on installed package libpng-1.0.2

The something about incompatibility because of this and a fatal error, and
then ntop shuts down. I've tried to look for an rpm package that lets me
upgrade the libpng library but haven't succeeded. I compiled a
libpng-1.2.8rc5 but I don't know how to make it work, because it still
detects the old libpng-1.0.2.

Like I said I'm new to this and my boss just said make it work, I'd
appreciate any help I can from any good soul out there that has compasion
for nooobs. If anyone can tell a surefire way to get it up and running with
the graphics please help me out.

Thanx!
