No configuration needed in ntop BUT you must configure reverse DNS zone(s) on
your DNS Server so that you have PTR type records for each host on your LAN's.

Pings work from forward lookups name->ip whereas ntop needs to do a reverse
ip->name.

Do google for "Reverse DNS" and you should find plenty of articles on this
subject.

Subject: [Ntop] IP numbers to machine names in ntop

Hello All,

  Ive had ntop running fine on three of our linux servers at school( for
three subnets). Problem: When viewing ntop all I see are IP numbers and
not the actual netbios name of the pcs on our three subnets. How do I
configure Ntop to "See" our internal dns server to convert the IP
numbers to actual machine numbers to be seen in Ntop? With only having
IP numbers in Ntop it really cuts down on the ease of use:(
 I CAN ping all machines by name on all of our subnets both ways.
I'm not sure were my dns is dying to Ntop?

Linux FC5 server,,,windows Xp clients and linuc clients.

thanks,,

Barry Cisna
