Each rrd file is a fixed size. The number of rrd files that will be created is dependent on the traffic you are seeing.
However, the parameters such as number of months determine the duration of the data that will be stored and thus (indirectly) the per-rrd size. If the rrd stores, say, 5 months of data, it will always have 5 months of data. Today those five months would be mid-August -> mid-January. Next month it will be mid-September -> mid-February. Always 5 months, but which 5 months changes over time. Hence the fixed size of the file. There is some information about rrd files in the FAQ and there (is/used to be) a write-up on SourceForge too. -----Burton It does delimit it in a way, but from my understanding it still depends on the amount of data your saving - which is directly proportional to the network I/O load ntop sees and/or is configured to store. 3 months of data on my network might be 2GB, while 3 months on your network might be 20GB. Also, unless your load is predictable and constant, it will will vary on your network as well. January might be slow and only consume 1GB, while March is really busy and needs 20GB. I would say it defines the amount of time stored on disk, but the amount of data would be unique to each install and probably pretty dynamic. Does the "dump months" parameter fix in any global manner the amount of time (months) of the maximum period to represent historical data? If so, this parameter is delimiting as well the amount of hard disk space, I mean, the maximum space which will be used if the dump month period is covered updating rrd? Is there any way to know how much hard disk space is equivalent to for example 3 months dump month? Thanks in advance, Jorge _______________________________________________ Ntop mailing list [email protected] http://listgateway.unipi.it/mailman/listinfo/ntop

"This email is intended to be reviewed by only the intended recipient and may contain information that is privileged and/or confidential.
