I would say don't use ssl then :) Make sure no other service is listening on 443. Also, maybe specify the ssl info with the startup command instead of the preferences. I doubt this will help but I've seen stranger things. Have you tried a different browser as well? Maybe it's some security setting.
If none of this works maybe run tcpdump, ethereal, etc and capture the network traffic and see what's up. If you need help analyzing this let me know. Oh - I guess you could turn on the verbose logging. Check out -t 5 (6) and -K - or -k I can't remember.
