Thank you for that reply, but I was running the command as root (using 'sudo'). 
 That's why I came to this list.  I was wondering why I still had a permissions 
error.  When I first was trying nTop last year, I had made that mistake a few 
times.  Since then, though, I always install nTop as root.

Any other ideas as to why I'm getting a permission issue with 
/bin/bash: ./mkinstalldirs: Permission denied
?

    You have to be root when you do a make install.
